Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK. This strategic report is one of the key outputs. This includes a discussion of the issues and challenges in applying ethical concepts, particularly those set out in international standards on human and labour rights, to the seafood industry; an overview of the main issues for risk assessment, by country and region, by forms of employment, and to some extent by species; and the remedies and responses, drawing on the recent experience from Thailand. -

Seafood Imports - Legislation and Official Procedures - Questions and Answers
Import controls are in place to protect human and animal health. Food originating outside the UK may have been produced to different standards to the ones in force throughout the EU. Border controls ensure that only food that meets national food safety legislation, and therefore poses no risk to public health, is allowed into the country. Examples of food that would be stopped at the border are fish containing unacceptable levels of mercury, or shellfish containing natural toxins. -
Recent advances in the use of DNA and other techniques in the seafood supply chain
There have been several recent reports in the media concerning mislabelled fish, both in the national and international press. Some reports reveal obvious fraud where an expensive species is substituted with a cheaper one such as pangasius being sold as cod, or inadvertent substitution of species, where it is equally possible that the expensive species is sold as the cheap species, and vice versa. This fact sheet outlines some of the techniques currently used to accurately identify seafood and seafood products, and reviews some of the benefits and limitations of the latest DNA and other techniques used for identification purposes within commercial, enforcement and fisheries science. -
Appraisal of the opportunity for offshore aquaculture in UK waters. Report of project FC0934, commissioned by Defra and Seafish from FRM Ltd.
The report provides an assessment of the potential for open ocean, offshore finfish aquaculture in UK waters using candidate species which would have similar growth and performance characteristics to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)and with due reference to other potential species candidates. -

This Philippines profile looks at the main seafood products; seafood exports to UK; employment in seafood; human trafficking and forced labour indicators and rankings and research reports; ratification of international human rights and labour instruments; fisheries policy and management structure/administration; control of IUU fishing and related labour abuse; measures to protect migrant fishers; partnerships and improvement projects; and an overall assessment or criteria for overall risk assessment for the Philippines. -
Review of polyphosphates as additives and testing methods for them in scallops and prawns
Seafish commissioned Campden BRI to conduct a desk-based literature review to provide information on the use of polyphosphates in seafood products, notably scallops and prawns. This report provides background information on polyphosphates including what they are, their presence, composition, how they interact with the product, how they break down over time and naturally occurring levels. A review of testing methodologies is also included. -
